PR Card Renewal in Canada: How Do You Apply?

Table of Content

PR card renewal lets eligible permanent residents replace an expired or soon-to-expire permanent resident card. You must apply from inside Canada, provide the required documents and pay the application fee. Your permanent resident status does not automatically end when your card expires.

If you are planning a trip, check your card early. An expired card can create problems when boarding commercial transport back to Canada, even though you still hold PR status.

Quick Answer

You can apply for PR card renewal when your card has expired or will expire in less than nine months. Most PR cards are valid for five years, although some are issued for one year.

The application fee is CAD50 per person. The standard online process uses the Permanent Residence Portal, where you complete IMM 5444, upload your checklist and supporting documents, and submit your application.

You also need to meet the relevant residency requirements. Renewal is not automatic just because you previously received a card.

Why This Matters

Your PR card and your permanent resident status are different.

The card is evidence of your status and is normally needed to board a plane, train, bus or boat back to Canada. Its expiry date does not mean your permission to live and work in Canada ends on that date.

For example, someone living in Canada with an expired card can still be a permanent resident. However, travelling abroad without arranging the documents needed for the return journey can disrupt their plans.

Who Is Eligible for PR Card Renewal?

You must hold Canadian permanent resident status and be in Canada when applying. You must not have lost that status or become a Canadian citizen.

IRCC also assesses whether you meet the applicable residency obligation.

If you have been a permanent resident for at least five years, the usual requirement is 730 qualifying days during the five years before your application. If you have held PR status for less than five years, you must show that you can meet the requirement within your first five years.

Certain time outside Canada can count, but only under specific rules. Check your PR residency obligation before submitting, particularly if you have spent long periods abroad.

If your calculation appears short, do not assume that card expiry has already ended your status. Check whether qualifying absences or humanitarian and compassionate considerations are relevant to your circumstances.

When Should You Renew Your PR Card?

Check the expiry date printed on your card. IRCC accepts ordinary renewal applications when the card has expired or will expire in less than nine months.

Apply within that window with enough time for preparation and processing. Do not wait until the week before a planned trip.

For example, if your card expires in seven months and you intend to travel later in the year, you can begin preparing your renewal application now.

An application to replace a lost or damaged card, or update personal details, can involve different instructions from an ordinary renewal.

Is Renewal Different From Getting Your First Card?

Yes. Most new permanent residents receive their first card without a separate card application if they provide their Canadian mailing address and photo within 180 days of becoming a permanent resident.

Your confirmation of permanent residence relates to obtaining PR status. Renewal concerns replacing a card after you already hold that status.

If you never received your first card, check IRCC’s first-card instructions rather than automatically selecting renewal.

What Documents Do You Need for PR Card Renewal?

Follow the current IMM 5644 document checklist and the instructions for your circumstances. Typical requirements include:

  • A completed IMM 5444 application.
  • A copy of an accepted passport or travel document.
  • A copy of your current PR card, following the renewal instructions.
  • A recent photo that meets IRCC’s specifications.
  • Evidence supporting your residency compliance.
  • The CAD50 payment receipt.
  • Additional forms or documents where relevant, such as proof of a legal name change or representative details.

IRCC’s guide asks for copies of two pieces of evidence supporting residency compliance. Examples include employment records, pay slips, bank statements, tax notices of assessment and rental agreements.

Choose evidence that supports the relevant period. A document showing your Canadian address today may not explain where you lived several years ago.

Review your travel history against passports, bookings and other records. Make sure the dates agree across your application.

If a discrepancy needs clarification, a letter of explanation can help connect your explanation with supporting evidence. It does not replace a required document.

How Do You Submit a PR Card Renewal Application?

1. Start Your Application

Sign in to the Permanent Residence Portal and begin the PR card application. Complete the digital IMM 5444 accurately.

IRCC also provides paper application instructions and accommodation options. Follow the official instructions for the method you use.

2. Prepare Your Checklist and Uploads

Complete IMM 5644 and upload the required documents. Check that scans are readable and that your photo meets the specifications.

Use the photo requirements for a PR card, rather than assuming any passport-style photograph will be accepted.

3. Pay the Fee

Pay through IRCC’s online payment service and upload the receipt to the portal. The payment is made separately from the portal application.

4. Review and Submit

Check your personal details, travel dates, supporting evidence and signatures before submitting.

Saving a draft does not submit the application. Keep a copy of your submission confirmation and documents.

5. Monitor Your Application

Follow IRCC’s application-status instructions and respond to any requests. Update your address if it changes while you wait.

How Much Does a PR Card Renewal Cost?

The government application fee is CAD50 per person, checked in October 2026.

You may also have separate expenses for photographs, translations or professional support, depending on your circumstances. These are not included in the government fee.

Check the official IRCC fee information before paying.

How Long Does Renewal Take?

Processing times change. Check IRCC’s current estimate for PR card renewals when preparing your application.

The estimate is not a guaranteed delivery date. Missing information, document checks or requests for further evidence can affect the time needed.

IRCC may mail your card to your Canadian address or ask you to collect it. Follow the instructions you receive.

Can You Request Urgent PR Card Renewal?

Urgent processing is available only in qualifying circumstances. Examples include travel for a job opportunity, work, serious illness or a family member’s serious illness or death.

You need evidence of the reason and your travel plans. An ordinary holiday does not automatically qualify.

IRCC states that it cannot process a PR card application in less than three weeks. Even an accepted urgent request does not guarantee that the card will arrive before departure.

Can You Travel While Your Renewal Is Pending?

Submitting a renewal application does not give you a temporary travel document.

If your existing card remains valid, check that it will still be valid when you return. If you are abroad without a valid card and plan to return by commercial transport, you generally need a permanent resident travel document.

Returning across a land border in a private vehicle has different document rules. Check the official requirements for your route.

You cannot use a visitor visa or eTA as a substitute for the travel documents required of a Canadian permanent resident.

Common Mistakes With PR Card Renewal

  • Assuming an expired card means PR status has expired.
  • Applying too early for an ordinary renewal.
  • Leaving gaps or inconsistencies in travel history.
  • Uploading a photo that does not meet the specifications.
  • Providing residency evidence that does not support the relevant period.
  • Forgetting the fee receipt, checklist or required signatures.
  • Assuming a pending application guarantees a return flight to Canada.

If you are eligible, you may also consider a Canadian citizenship application. Citizenship has separate requirements, and applying does not replace the travel documents you need while you remain a permanent resident.

FAQs

Yes, if you are in Canada and meet the applicable requirements. Card expiry does not itself end your permanent resident status.

No. You must apply from inside Canada. If you are abroad without a valid card, check the documents required for your return journey.

A language test is not a standard PR card renewal requirement. Renewal assesses your card application and relevant status requirements, rather than repeating the selection process for your original immigration program.

No. A new card expiry date does not reset your residency obligation. The relevant calculation depends on how long you have held PR status and the period being assessed.

An expired card does not itself remove your right to work as a permanent resident. You may need other accepted documents to demonstrate your status for a particular administrative process.

Conclusion

PR card renewal allows eligible permanent residents in Canada to replace an expired or soon-to-expire card. Meeting the relevant residency requirements, providing accurate supporting documents and submitting a complete application are central to the process.

Before applying, check your card expiry date, travel history and supporting evidence against IRCC’s requirements. Since immigration requirements and procedures can change, always check the latest guidance on the official Government of Canada website.
