    Frequantly Asked Questions

There is no one-size-fits-all type of profile that is eligible for Express Entry. Candidates who enter the pool receive a comprehensive ranking system (CRS) score. Those who rank higher, are more likely to receive an invitation to apply.

Express Entry is a program designed to process applications within six months of the date of filing, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC, formerly known as CIC).

Note that this refers to the period of time beginning six months after the date the applicant submits a complete application for permanent residence following the issuance of an invitation to apply, not the date the applicant expressed interest in emigrating to Canada.

The following Canadian economic immigration programs are subject to the Express Entry system:

    • Federal Skilled Worker Class
    • Federal Skilled Trades Class
    • Canadian Experience Class
    • Provincial Nominee Programs

The potential candidate’s misrepresentation may result in fines, depending on the nature and severity of the claim. Providing incorrect information to enter the Express Entry pool might bar a candidate for five years. Thus, consistently providing accurate information is crucial. Before entering Express Entry, candidates who are doubtful of their skills and qualifications may choose to consult an immigration lawyer.

Candidates that create an Express Entry profile and qualify for a Canadian economic immigration program enter the pool. These include the Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class, Canadian Experience Class, and some Provincial Nominee Programs.

The Canadian government ranks candidates by human capital, including age, education, and language proficiency, using the Comprehensive Ranking System. This helps IRCC, formerly CIC, decide which candidates receive permanent residence invitations. Candidates might receive 600 points for core human capital and skills transferability. Additional variables including provincial nomination, planned employment, and Canadian study experience might add 600 points.

Search for Canadian job openings online through the Canada Job Bank. Skills, knowledge, and experience are used to connect people with Canadian firms and employment. If they have no Canadian job offer or Provincial/Territorial nomination, Express Entry candidates can register with the Job Bank. Since June 6, 2017, Job Bank registration is voluntary.

An Invitation to Apply (ITA) is offered to any candidate in the Express Entry pool who has been selected to apply for immigration to Canada by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). A candidate who receives an ITA will have meet the requirements in one of IRCC’s draws from the pool. This includes meeting the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off threshold for that draw.

None of the programs provide occupation lists. Under earlier Federal Skilled Worker Class editions, the government of Canada listed qualified vocations in demand. The latest Canadian Experience Class had an ineligible occupation list. These lists vanished. However, candidates for Express Entry programs must have work experience in an occupation with a National Occupation Classification (NOC) code of skill category 0, A, or B.
