And how long will it take before the status changes?<\/p><p data-start=\"669\" data-end=\"999\">Background verification is a normal part of many Canadian immigration applications. IRCC explains that it uses this stage to determine whether an applicant is admissible to Canada. In the application status tracker, background verification is one of the areas that may be shown alongside eligibility, medical exams and biometrics.<\/p><p data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1168\">Understanding what this status means can make it easier to follow your application without reading too much into every change\u2014or lack of change\u2014in your online account.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"1sg8ifq\" data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1206\">What Is an IRCC Background Check?<\/h2><p data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1343\">An IRCC background check is part of the process used to determine whether there are reasons an applicant may be inadmissible to Canada.<\/p><p data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1619\">Depending on the application and individual circumstances, the assessment can involve criminality, security and other background information. For example, the current IRCC application status tracker separately identifies eligibility, medical exams, background verification and biometrics.<\/p><p data-start=\"6106\" data-end=\"6359\">For Express Entry permanent residence applications, IRCC states that its decision is based on whether the applicant is eligible for the program and admissible to Canada based on matters including medical exams, police certificates and background checks.<\/p><p data-start=\"6361\" data-end=\"6508\">The fact that one stage has started\u2014or even finished\u2014should therefore not be treated as confirmation that the overall application will be approved.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"zqbc62\" data-start=\"6510\" data-end=\"6557\">How Long Does an IRCC Background Check Take?<\/h2><p data-start=\"6559\" data-end=\"6670\">There is no single published background-check timeframe that applies to every Canadian immigration application.<\/p><p data-start=\"6672\" data-end=\"6943\">The time required can depend on the application, the information being assessed and whether IRCC needs anything further. Applicants should therefore be cautious about unofficial timelines claiming that a background check always takes a particular number of days or weeks.<\/p><p data-start=\"6945\" data-end=\"7195\">Instead, check the official IRCC processing-time information for your application type and monitor your account for messages. IRCC notes that its processing-time tool provides an indication of how long it currently takes to process most applications.<\/p><p data-start=\"7197\" data-end=\"7303\">Processing times and procedures can change, so check the official IRCC website for the latest information.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"enmz9b\" data-start=\"7305\" data-end=\"7347\">Why Can a Background Check Take Longer?<\/h2><p data-start=\"7349\" data-end=\"7510\">Applications do not all require the same amount of review. A background-verification status remaining unchanged does not automatically indicate a negative issue.<\/p><p data-start=\"7512\" data-end=\"7753\">Processing may also require IRCC to obtain clarification or additional information. If something further is required from you, IRCC can place the relevant section in a \u201cWaiting on you\u201d status and provide instructions under \u201cYour next steps.\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"7755\" data-end=\"7997\">Depending on the application, IRCC may ask for documents or actions such as police certificates, passports, fees or biometrics. If you receive a request, follow the instructions and deadline provided rather than submitting unrelated evidence.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"1j3upvy\" data-start=\"7999\" data-end=\"8052\">Can You Check the Status of Your Background Check?<\/h2><p data-start=\"8054\" data-end=\"8183\">You can check the information IRCC makes available for your application through the appropriate online status service or account.<\/p><p data-start=\"8185\" data-end=\"8421\">The method depends on what you applied for and, in some cases, how you submitted your application. IRCC&#8217;s status systems can show application updates and messages, while some trackers provide the status of individual application stages.<\/p><p data-start=\"8423\" data-end=\"8526\">You should not assume that a lack of visible updates means IRCC has stopped working on the application.<\/p><p data-start=\"8528\" data-end=\"8750\">IRCC also states that its Client Support Centre agents generally cannot provide processing updates beyond the information available through the online systems or tell you exactly how much longer your application will take.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"rv0uss\" data-start=\"8752\" data-end=\"8809\">Can GCMS Notes Tell You More About a Background Check?<\/h2><p data-start=\"8811\" data-end=\"8941\">Applicants sometimes request <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadagmc.com\/gcms-notes-canada\/\"><strong data-start=\"8840\" data-end=\"8854\">GCMS notes<\/strong><\/a> when they want more information about the processing of their immigration application.<\/p><p data-start=\"8943\" data-end=\"9178\">These records can provide information recorded in the case-management system, but they should not be treated as a real-time tracker.
