High-Wage Occupations: Which Jobs Qualify for Express Entry?

Table of Content

High-wage occupations can qualify eligible applicants for additional CRS points based on Canadian work experience or points for a qualifying job offer under the Express Entry rules effective November 3, 2026. The starting point is your occupation’s classification, rather than how impressive your job title sounds.

Before claiming points, identify your correct National Occupational Classification (NOC) code and check it against IRCC’s list. A salary figure alone cannot tell you whether your occupation qualifies.

Quick Answer

Express Entry uses three high-wage occupation levels. They compare an occupation’s national median wage with the Canadian workforce benchmark.

You must have an eligible listed occupation and meet the relevant employment or offer requirements. Being on the list does not automatically give you points or guarantee an invitation.

Why This Matters

Someone researching Canadian jobs may encounter several different labels: skilled, in demand, high paying and eligible for immigration.

Those descriptions are not interchangeable. A vacancy can offer an attractive salary without meeting the requirements for a particular immigration benefit.

The November 2026 changes make occupation classification relevant to the Labour Market Integration factor. This factor assesses qualifying Canadian experience or a qualifying offer, using whichever option produces the higher score. It does not add both options together.

For planning, separate three questions: whether you qualify for Express Entry, whether your employment supports points and whether your overall profile is competitive.

What Counts as a High-Wage Occupation?

IRCC classifies occupations using national wage data associated with their NOC codes. It draws on Job Bank, Labour Force Survey and Census information over three years.

The list effective November 3, 2026 uses 2023–2025 data. Your own salary does not determine the classification.

Treat the published list as the reference. Avoid trying to calculate eligibility from an online salary advert.

High-Wage Occupations: The Three Levels

The occupation’s median wage falls into one of these groups:

  • Highest level: At least twice the workforce benchmark.
  • Middle level: At least 1.5 times, but below twice, the benchmark.
  • Lowest qualifying level: At least 1.3 times, but below 1.5 times, the benchmark.

These wage levels are different from TEER categories, which classify occupations by training, education, experience and responsibilities.

Which High-Wage Occupations Are Listed?

Examples from IRCC’s list include:

  • Highest: Financial managers, NOC 10010; petroleum engineers, NOC 21332.
  • Middle: Software engineers and designers, NOC 21231; registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses, NOC 31301.
  • Lowest qualifying: Financial auditors and accountants, NOC 11100; heavy-duty equipment mechanics, NOC 72401.

These examples are not the complete list. Search IRCC’s official high-wage occupation page for your specific five-digit code.

How to Check Whether Your Job Qualifies

1. Match Your Duties Before Checking Points

Start with your actual responsibilities. Your employer’s title may differ from the wording used in the NOC.

Use our guide to find your NOC code, then compare the official description with the work you performed.

Do not choose a nearby occupation because it appears to offer more points. Your evidence needs to support the code you claim.

2. Locate the Code on the Official List

Search using the complete code rather than a broad sector such as finance, technology or healthcare.

Record the listed wage level and the date you checked it. This creates a useful reference when reviewing your profile and documents.

3. Check the Relevant Employment Requirements

A matching code answers the occupation question. You still need to establish whether your completed Canadian employment or prospective offer meets the relevant requirements.

Keep those checks separate in your notes. That makes it easier to identify missing information before submitting or updating a profile.

How Do High-Wage Occupations Affect CRS Points?

There are two employment-based options under the Labour Market Integration factor:

  • Eligible Canadian experience can earn duration-based points, with an additional high-wage component where its requirements are met.
  • A qualifying offer in a listed occupation can earn offer-based points.

The offer levels provide 100, 70 or 50 points. The additional high-wage experience component provides up to 70, 40 or 20 points, depending on qualifying experience and occupation levels.

These are different calculations. The maximum for the whole factor is 150 points without an accompanying spouse or partner, or 140 with one.

Our guide to job offer points explains the offer assessment. The companion article on Canadian work experience covers employment already completed.

Does a Higher Salary Move You Into a Higher Level?

No. The classification follows the occupation’s listed level.

A pay rise may matter to your finances, but it does not by itself change your NOC or the level used for this assessment.

If your responsibilities change substantially, review the occupation classification against the new duties. Keep evidence of the actual role rather than relying on a revised title alone.

Are High-Wage Occupations the Same as Express Entry Categories?

No. Category-based selection identifies candidates who meet particular round requirements, such as relevant occupational experience or French-language proficiency.

The high-wage assessment concerns employment-related CRS scoring. A category-based round concerns which eligible candidates are considered for that invitation round.

A candidate may satisfy both sets of requirements, one set or neither. Check them separately.

Category eligibility also does not remove the need to qualify for an Express Entry program. Eligible candidates remain ranked by CRS within the relevant round.

What If Your Occupation Is Not on the List?

Absence from the list does not automatically exclude you from Express Entry.

Qualifying Canadian employment can still earn duration-based points even without the high-wage component. A qualifying offer may also be relevant to program eligibility without earning high-wage offer points.

Review the rest of your profile too. Language results, education and other eligible factors can affect your ranking. Our existing guide explains broader ways to improve your CRS score.

Avoid changing career plans solely because a different occupation appears on a list. Consider your qualifications, licensing requirements and realistic employment options alongside immigration rules.

What Happens If the High-Wage List Changes?

If IRCC changes the list after issuing your Invitation to Apply, it uses the occupation level applicable on your invitation date.

Keep a dated record of the classification you relied on. If you are still in the pool, check current instructions before assuming an earlier classification remains applicable.

Common Mistakes

  • Using personal salary to decide the occupation’s level.
  • Selecting a NOC by title without checking duties.
  • Treating a skilled occupation as automatically high wage.
  • Assuming all jobs in a sector have the same classification.
  • Adding offer points and experience points together.
  • Treating category-based selection as the same assessment.

A practical review sheet should show your NOC, its wage level, the employment evidence available and which scoring option you are assessing.

FAQs

No. You must also meet the requirements for the experience or job offer you are claiming.

Not necessarily. The experience-based option can apply to qualifying Canadian employment already completed.

Overseas experience alone does not meet the Canadian-experience requirement. Foreign skilled experience may remain relevant elsewhere in your eligibility and CRS assessment.

No. An occupation classification does not grant work authorisation. Check the permit or exemption required for your circumstances separately.

No. It changes how relevant employment is assessed within Express Entry. You still need to qualify under an immigration program managed through the system.

Conclusion

High-wage occupations can affect employment-related Express Entry scoring, but the correct NOC classification is only the starting point. Qualifying Canadian experience or a suitable job offer and the wider program requirements remain central to the assessment.

Before claiming points, check your occupation against the official list and ensure your employment documents support your profile. Since immigration requirements and procedures can change, always check the latest guidance on the official Government of Canada website.
