Job Offer Points: How They Affect Your CRS Score

Table of Contents

Job offer points can affect your Express Entry CRS score under the rules effective November 3, 2026, but not every Canadian employment offer qualifies. The occupation, offer terms and employer assessment all matter.

You also need to understand how these points interact with employment experience. An offer’s point value is not necessarily the amount added to your total score.

Quick Answer

A qualifying offer in an eligible high-wage occupation can receive 50, 70 or 100 points under the Labour Market Integration factor.

IRCC compares that result with the points available through your qualifying Canadian experience and uses the higher result. It does not combine the two options.

The offer must meet the relevant requirements and be genuine. A written promise of employment alone does not establish entitlement to points.

Why This Matters

An employment offer can be valuable without producing the score increase you expected.

Before changing your immigration plans, separate three questions:

  • Does the offer meet the relevant program requirements?
  • Does the occupation qualify for offer-based CRS points?
  • Is the offer score higher than your experience-based score?

Answering them in order helps you assess the offer realistically. It also helps you identify which documents you need from the employer.

How Many Job Offer Points Can You Receive?

The available score depends on the offered occupation’s level on IRCC’s list:

  • Highest level, with an occupation median at least twice the workforce benchmark: 100 points.
  • Middle level, at least 1.5 times but below twice the benchmark: 70 points.
  • Lowest qualifying level, at least 1.3 times but below 1.5 times the benchmark: 50 points.
  • An occupation outside the high-wage list: no offer-based points under this factor.

Check the NOC code against the list of eligible high-wage occupations. IRCC classifies the occupation using national wage data, rather than assigning its level from your personal salary.

A better-paid offer does not automatically move the occupation into a higher scoring group.

Which Employment Offers Qualify?

A qualifying offer generally needs to be for paid, full-time, continuous employment in Canada lasting at least one year after you become a permanent resident.

Check the requirements applicable to your program and occupation. Particular provisions apply to skilled trades and certain physicians.

The offer should be recent, written and clear about:

  • The employer and position.
  • Main duties.
  • Pay and deductions.
  • Working hours.
  • Employment conditions and duration.

A work permit is not itself a job offer. If you already work for the employer, check whether the written offer establishes the future employment required for the assessment.

For preparation, compare the offer with the information in your profile. Ask the employer to clarify missing or inconsistent details before relying on it.

Do You Need an LMIA for Job Offer Points?

From November 3, 2026, a qualifying offer does not need an LMIA to receive these Express Entry points. Holding an LMIA does not create extra points or priority.

The change concerns the Express Entry assessment. It does not mean every temporary job in Canada is now exempt from work-permit or LMIA requirements.

If you intend to start work before obtaining permanent residence, assess the authorisation needed for that employment separately.

How Does IRCC Check Whether an Offer Is Genuine?

IRCC assesses the employer’s business, its need for the position and its ability to honour the employment terms.

The officer also considers whether the employer follows employment and recruitment laws, and whether you can perform the work and are likely to accept it.

A strong preparation file explains the practical arrangement clearly. Keep the offer, job description and relevant correspondence together.

For example, if an offer refers to a different location or job title from earlier correspondence, ask for clarification. Unexplained differences make the arrangement harder to understand.

Claiming points in a profile does not replace the later IRCC eligibility review. The application must support the claim.

Job Offer Points vs Canadian Experience: What Counts?

Compare the offer score with your work experience points, including any qualifying high-wage experience component.

Here is an illustrative calculation for a candidate without an accompanying spouse or partner:

  • Two years of eligible Canadian experience provides 53 duration-based points.
  • Assume the candidate also qualifies for the 40-point high-wage experience component.
  • The experience-based result is 93 points.
  • A qualifying middle-level offer provides 70 points.
  • IRCC uses 93, rather than adding 70 to it.

In another example, assume a candidate has no qualifying Canadian experience but has a valid highest-level offer. The offer-based result can be 100 points.

These examples concern one CRS factor, not the complete score. Language, education and other relevant factors still require separate assessment.

Can an Offer Help Eligibility Without Earning CRS Points?

Yes. Program eligibility and offer-based CRS scoring are separate assessments.

An offer outside the high-wage list may still be relevant to eligibility under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program, if it meets the applicable requirements.

Similarly, immigrating without a job offer remains possible for applicants who qualify through a suitable route.

Avoid treating “valid for program eligibility” and “worth CRS offer points” as interchangeable descriptions.

Updating Your Profile to Claim Job Offer Points

Review your employment information when you receive a new offer or its terms change.

Check the employer details, NOC code, start date and written conditions against your profile. Keep a copy of the documents used for the update.

IRCC has published transitional instructions for entering offers without an LMIA while its online questions are being updated. Follow those official instructions rather than guessing how to answer an outdated field.

IRCC also advises that the November 3 recalculation of existing profiles may take up to two weeks, with invitation rounds paused during that process. Do not treat an immediately unchanged score as a final assessment.

What If the Offer Is Withdrawn?

A revoked offer no longer qualifies.

Review your Express Entry position if the employer withdraws it or changes material terms. Do not continue relying on an employment arrangement that is no longer available.

If you already have an invitation or an application in progress, check the appropriate reporting steps promptly. Keep the employer’s communication so the dates and circumstances are clear.

Common Mistakes With Job Offer Points

  • Assuming every Canadian offer earns points.
  • Using personal salary to choose a high-wage level.
  • Adding offer points to the experience-based result.
  • Treating a work permit as proof of a qualifying offer.
  • Assuming the Express Entry change removes all temporary work requirements.
  • Failing to review a withdrawn or materially changed offer.

Before claiming points, check the offer’s terms, occupation classification, employer evidence and scoring comparison together.

Where to Go Next

These guides explain the connected occupation, scoring and application requirements:

FAQs

No. Compare the offer result with the experience-based result already available to you. IRCC uses the higher option within this factor.

Potentially. The arrangement can concern an existing position or employer, but it must satisfy the requirements. Current employment alone is not enough.

No. Invitations depend on your overall score and the requirements of the relevant round.

Do not assume remote work automatically qualifies. Check whether the arrangement satisfies the requirement for employment in Canada and all other applicable conditions.

No. Check the occupation’s listed level and whether the offer qualifies. Salary alone does not establish either.

Conclusion

Job offer points can affect Express Entry ranking when an offer meets the relevant requirements and concerns an eligible high-wage occupation. The employer assessment and comparison with your Canadian-experience score are central to understanding its actual effect.

Before claiming points, check the written employment terms, occupation classification and information in your profile. Since immigration requirements and procedures can change, always check the latest guidance on the official Government of Canada website.
